Sarah Anne D'Antoni (Naiya, shey/they) is the founder and primary practitioner of Ancestral Weavings, an ancestral guide, ceremonialist, and systemic constellations facilitator rooted in Boulder, Colorado.

My entry into ancestral work began not with a dramatic awakening, but with a question: Who was my grandmother?

My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer when my mother was only ten years old. This grief lived unspoken in our family for decades, shaping what could not be named. It wasn't until I began asking questions about my ancestry that I began to see how much her absence had shaped our experience. Both my maternal grandparents died before I could meet them, leaving me feeling profoundly disconnected from story, from inheritance, and from part of the lineage that had made my life possible.

We are formed in our mother's eggs while she gestates in our grandmother's body. We carry our grandmothers not only as memory, but as biology, as cellular knowing. Yet I had never felt this connection. When I began to look back, to ask the questions, to remember who was with me, my grandparents appeared. The longing I had carried my whole life for elders, for guides, for culture, for connection to lineage and place, began to make sense. It was ancestral longing.

But looking back also meant reckoning. My Sicilian ancestors left their home, their land, their language, and much of what they carried was lost to empire, to survival, to displacement. My Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors survived diaspora and persecution and carry traditions that remain rich and alive, yet complex and impacted by empire. What colonization takes is not always obvious, but it takes something from everyone. No lineage arrives here untouched.

In the gaps, I found teachers in indigenous traditions that have nourished my remembering and have shown me what it looks like when the threads between the living and the dead remain intact. The unseen still hold what was lost in our lineages. The traditions are not dead; they are in hiding, waiting to be revived.

Once I saw this clearly, I could not unknowingly repeat it by allowing culture to be erased. This is a choice point we are all asked to face, to let go of tradition in the name of progress or preserve the seeds of soul that have been planted long ago. Ancestral repair is an act of dreaming, of asking together what we want to grow for the generations to come. I often ask myself, “What does it mean to be a good ancestor?”
